The average person needs 7 1/2 hours of sleep every night, but this number varies from one person to the next. For "short sleepers" (1 person in 1000), getting just 4 hours of sleep a night is enough. For "long sleepers" (4 people out of every 1000) it takes10 hours of sleep to feel rested. How to calculate your individual needs? You've gotten enough sleep when you can wake up without an alarm clock. "Long sleepers who try to exist on less than 8 hours may suffer from continuous sleep deprivation and not even realize it," says William Moorcroft, Ph.D., director of the Sleep Research Lab at Luther College and author of Sleep, Dreaming, Sleep Disorders. An earlier bedtime is the only way to make morning easier for a true long sleeper.
To find your ideal sleep dosage, try pushing your bedtime back in fifteen minute
increments. An extra half-hour of sleep may be all you need to relieve morning
drowsiness.
